Microsoft acquired the phone business of Nokia In September of 2013. This was part of a total deal totaling 7.17 billion. Nokia's former CEO, Stephen Elop along with several other executives became members the new Microsoft/Nokia mobile subsidiary as portion of the deal, finalized April 25, 2014..In November 2014, The new Microsoft Nokia subsidiary divulged a plan to license product engineering and other technologies to outside third-party phone manufacturers, to primarily enable a continued Nokia brand presence in the end user market.

Microsoft Mobile a multinational mobile computing and mobile phone device manufacturing company with headquarters in Espoo, Finland, is an entirely owned Microsoft subsidiary. Its primary activity is design, creation, producer and distribution of smartphones, mobile phones, tables and related phone accessories.

Microsoft Mobile was founded following Microsoft's acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services arm, which was finalized in April of 2014. Although Microsoft possesses a restricted license to utilize the Nokia name along with its logo on phones like the Series 40 along with the Asha product lines, Microsoft was only authorized a transitional license to utilize the Nokia name. An announced was made in October 2014 that forthcoming Lumia devices would be branded as Microsoft and contain the Microsoft logo in place of Nokia.
