Half Moon Bay, is both a town and beach situated in San Mateo County on the Northern coast of California. Located about 25 miles south from the City of San Francisco and 10 miles due west of the City of San Mateo with Pillar Point Harbor being just North. Both the ocean front bay and the town and share the Half Moon Bay name. Low overcast and Fog are quite normal, usually clearing by the late morning. The Half Moon Bay was the first real town in the County of San Mateo. Initially called San Benito, and in 1874 subsequently rechristened Half Moon Bay
The historical downtown area is home to a large number of restaurants, shops, art galleries, bed and breakfasts inns, and other local businesses. The community parks and beaches can be accessed by bicyclists, equestrians and on foot. The City and coast are home to a vast number of farms and nurseries.
Inhabitants of this charming area reside with a style of life that many people think is long gone in California. Neighbors actually caring about one another, where schools are foremost, and there is a real sense of community.
An annual October Pumpkin Festival draws literally thousands of people to this coastal area to enjoy the genuine hospitality, fine cuisine, panoramic vistas, arts, and crafts. The entire coastal community along with Half Moon Bay takes pride their mild temperatures and rich agriculture valleys and floriculture center where there are roadside stands selling locally grown pumpkins, artichokes, fruit, greens, root vegetables, herbs and beans. And, did I mention the fresh seafood found all over in restaurants or just to take home to prepare yourself?
A public facility golf course (Half Moon Bay Golf Links) is a championship 36 hole course that features the American parklands-style Golf Course, of Arnold Palmer design and Ocean Course, an Arthur Hills-design of Scottish Links-style. The the 2008 LPGA Samsung World Championship was played at Ocean Course. Mullins Bar & Grill restaurant, named for native legend Clyde "Moon" Mullins also located on the Ocean Course grounds. The Ritz-Carlton hotel group maintains a hotel positioned along the town's southern coastline and is encircled by the Half Moon Bay Golf Links course.
At the northern boundary of Half Moon bay sits the renowned big wave surf locale, Mavericks, just off Pillar Point, the place pro surfers confront waves in exceeding 50 feet. Just to the north is Pillar Point Harbor featuring a boat marina - Updated 01/04/2011
